Story

The offer

Daeva, a job has turned up, are you interested?

This is a task that Daevas like you, tall and outgoing, are well suited to take on.

  • You keep listening.

To the southwest there is an expedition camp; scholars were sent there to investigate the surroundings of the Balaur and Gelkmaros.

However, the Balaur researcher stationed there was somewhat eccentric, and people are rather wary of him...

With your outgoing nature you should be able to handle him though.

His name is Tanar. Go and meet him.

  • You end the conversation.

Journal

Note: Meet the Balaur researcher at Phina’s request.

Along the way

They may be savages, but the Balaur are fascinating creatures.

Their technology – drana, Dredgions, the rifts they open in Dark Poeta... simply astonishing!

The Balaur may seem uncultured, but their flair for technology can rival even the craftiest Shugo tinkerers.

To have even a spark of hope of defeating the Balaur, we must learn more about them. Don’t you agree, Daeva?

  • You keep listening.

I’d like to retrieve and analyse every Balaur device found so far, but apparently no one wants to research alongside me.

The fortress children are fixated on battles and the like, and the few survivors have occupied the research institute for themselves.

Be that as it may, that’s beside the point. While I was out in the field protecting the naive little Itar from Balaurea’s wild beasts, I found an abandoned drana cultivation device in the Dragonrest.

  • You keep listening.

If not the Asmodians, then the Reians! I even drank with him!

He said we should jointly research the Balaur’s drana cultivation device in the Dragonrest.

But he’s at a place called the Altar of Transcendence?

How is a simple scholar supposed to get there!

You are to go as my representative to the Altar of Transcendence and meet Anilmo so that he can assist with the research!

  • You end the conversation.

It’s rather bold to come this far.

Greetings.

My name is Anilmo. Are you Tanar?

  • I was sent by Tanar.

Hahaha, I see.

He kept postponing the meeting in his letters, so I considered coming myself; but he’s sent someone instead.

I am researching here together with Tanar and the Balaur, observing how the creatures around the Drana Growing Device change.

  • You keep listening.

However, the Ruined Hurrikane in the area are so numerous and troublesome that the research can hardly progress.

They too appear to have been corrupted by the Drana Growing Device...

I cannot concentrate on the research if I have to deal with the noise from the group, so I must take measures.

Could you please help me?

  • You end the conversation.

Phew, it’s a bit quieter now.

They show little distrust toward creatures other than the Balaur, but if they are severely harassed they react violently.

It’s all because of the Drana Growing Device that’s inside these insects.

  • You keep listening.

Beneath the Altar of Transcendence, in Dragonrest, there is an Abandoned Drana Growing Device.

Tanar and I are examining the drive unit of this device to uncover how it works and to neutralise it in Balaurea so that the device no longer functions there.

To complete the research we absolutely need the drive unit of the device.

  • You keep listening.

Simply destroying the device would not solve the problem permanently and would be a cruel act.

If we recover the drive unit and disclose the method to neutralise it, it will benefit both the Reians and the Asmodians.

Daeva, after you have retrieved the drive unit from the Abandoned Drana Growing Device, please hand it over to Tanar.

The future of Gelkmaros rests in your hand.

  • You end the conversation.

Bah! I just can’t make heads or tails of this Balaur technology! I understand some of it, but most of it remains a mystery to me.

If only I could become one of the Balaur...

I’m only joking, of course, Daeva, I would never want to become one of those monsters.

... probably.

Ah, that was of course only a joke. Daeva, please bring the drive unit for the attachment quickly.

  • Here you are.

I need to research more to be sure, but astonishingly this unit doesn’t seem like a simple machine, but more like a living being.

Hm, thanks, I’m glad!

Good, I’ll devote myself to the research. Go and see Hrimfaxi!

  • You end the conversation.

So, do you support the Balaur researchers?

Were you able to learn anything?

  • You give your mission report.

Reward

Hmm... the generator seems more like a living being than a machine.

It is known that Tiamat’s Balaur are involved in biological research. It could be the generator itself or a result of that research.

But it’s strange that the generators are being activated.

I wonder if something has happened to the Balaur’s power.

Completion

Phina encountered a challenging line of Balaur research and asked Tanar to help her with the investigations.

Meet Anilmo, the researcher who is investigating the Balaur alongside Tanar, and assist with their research.

After you recovered the drive unit from the Abandoned Drana Growing Device in Dragonrest and brought it to Tanar, he said it was not merely a device but more akin to a living being.

When I reported these findings to Hrimfaxi, he said the Drana Growing Device actually seems intent on changing the Balaur power balance.
